ents/warm-periods-of-the-past\n\nWorlds that are warmer than today have a
particular relevance for the \nfuture. Although no period in the past is e
xactly analogous to the \nclimate of the future\, they all hold lessons ab
out the impacts of \nwarmth\, and provide test cases\, outside their calib
 ration range\, for \nmodels.\n\nThe last interglacial\, around 125\,000 ye
ars ago\, had particular warmth at \nthe poles\, and sea level considerabl
y higher than today. It holds the \nadvantage that it is relatively well-d
ocumented\, allowing the climate \ndynamics affecting polar regions and ic
e sheets to be examined. The \nPliocene\, around 3 million years ago offer
s the most recent period where \nwarmth is associated with CO2 levels comp
arable to those of today. Going \nback further (up to aroiund 50 million y
ears ago) we reach more extreme \nwarmth in conditions where Earth's geogr
aphy was different to that of \ntoday. Our speakers will discuss their fas
cinating findings\, built on \nnovel geochemistry and Earth system modelli
ng\, about the causes and \nconsequences of warmth in these periods. We w
ill finish with a panel \ndiscussion about how these results inform us abo
ut what to expect and \nwhat to avoid in the future.\n\n14.00 Introduction
