DESCRIPTION:The field of lipidomics is still emerging in comparison to gen
omics and proteomics. However\, how the lipidome changes throughout the li
fetime of a cell offers vital clues to the cell's function. Professor Mich
ael Wakelam\, the director of the Babraham institute\, is one of the leade
rs in the field of lipidomics and the techniques associated with the chara
cterisation of the lipidome. His own work focuses on the role of lipids in
ageing.\n\nBiography:\n\nMichael Wakelam received a BSc in Medical Bioche
mistry in 1977 and a PhD in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Bi
rmingham. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Konstanz\, Ger
many and Imperial College London he was appointed to a Lectureship\nin the
Biochemistry Department\, Glasgow University in 1985. He became Professor
of Molecular Pharmacology at the Institute for Cancer Studies\, Universit
y of Birmingham in 1993. In 2007 he became the Director of the Babraham In
stitute in Cambridge\, he is an Honorary Professor at Cambridge and Birmin
gham Universities and a visiting Professor at Kings College London. He is
also a Bye-Fellow at Downing College.
