DESCRIPTION:In this seminar I describe multi-site ethnography as a method
that could potentially overcome\nsome of the criticisms levelled at tradit
ional forms of ethnography. I highlight innovative\naspects of multi-site
ethnography and some of the challenges related to this method\, making\nre
ference to my research in one South African neighbourhood created during t
he apartheid\nera. I followed young people across classrooms\, hip-hop per
formances and a youth radio\nshow\, in an attempt to tell a bigger story a
bout their lives more generally. Multi-site\nethnography enabled me to cri
tique the assumption that classrooms are unique\, enclosed\nspaces where s
pecialised forms of pedagogy happen exclusively\, but it also provide many
\nlogistical and conceptual challenges.\nDr Adam Cooper is a Research Spec
ialist at the HSRC and research associate in Education\nPolicy Studies at
Stellenbosch University\, South Africa. He is author of the 2016 book:\nDi
alogue in Places of Learning: Youth Amplified in South Africa
