DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will review the recent advance in our understan
ding of the reionization period of the Universe.\nThe reionization period
of hydrogen is a key phase transition in the history of the Universe that
took place between about 200 millions years and one Giga-year after the Bi
g-Bang.\nThis transition originates fron the formation of the first lumino
us sources that emit UV photons capable of ionizing the hydrogen atoms res
iding in the intergalactic medium.\nThe transition is spread in time and c
omplete when the different ionized regions (HII regions) in expansion even
tually overlap\, leading to a Universe that is completely ionized.\nThis t
ransition is very important for our understanding of the galaxy formation
mechanism in the early Universe and to explain the morphology of the galax
ies we see today.\nThe observation of this transition are still poorly con
strained but a range of new campaigns are going to be undertaken to charac
terize this epoch in details in the next decade.\nIn the meantime a lot of
effort are deployed to perform numerical simulations of this transition i
n order to prepare our understanding of the future observations.\nIn this
talk\, I will discuss the different observational probes and simulation te
chniques that would help us to have a better understanding of the period o
f reionization in the near future.\n\nAll talks and obsnights are free to
members (or cost £2 for non-members) – membership can be bought (£12 l
ife\, £7 annual) at any of our events.
