DESCRIPTION:In 1948 a meeting at the Lenin Academy of Agricultural Science
s decided \nthat Michurinism - an account of epigenetic inheritance more c
ommonly \nknown as Lysenkoism - was preferable to Mendelianism\, with sign
ificant \nimplications for teaching and research. Many treat the Lysenko a
ffair as \na paradigmatic example of how politics and science should not r
elate. \nHow\, though\, should we characterise this case\, given recent cl
aims that \nscientific justification cannot or should not be "value-free"?
This \npaper investigates these issues\, arguing that concerns over "wish
ful \nspeaking" - rather than the more familiar "wishful thinking" - shoul
d be \ncentral to our thinking about the proper relationship between polit
 ical \ninstitutions and scientific practice.
