DESCRIPTION:This talk summarises some recent results on the use of control
theory to improve our understanding of the modelling and design of electr
ochemical energy storage devices known as supercapacitors. Due to their hi
gh power densities\, supercapacitors are becoming an increasingly popular
method for storing electrical energy and have been successfully applied in
areas such as hybrid power systems and the grid. A model based upon the d
evice electrochemistry is first analysed in detail before the synthesis of
low-order equivalent circuits from this electrochemical model is discusse
 d. Then\, the problem of design is considered and framed in a local absolu
te stability framework. Finally\, conditions are given to relax positivit
y of the terms of a candidate Lyapunov function for such a system.
