DESCRIPTION:*Café Synthetique is the monthly meetup for the Cambridge syn
thetic biology community with informal talks\, discussion and pub snacks.*
\n\nThis months' theme will focus on how biology is used as technology\, w
ith a particular focus on how we have and will continue to shape plant cro
ps species. We have two excellent speakers whose work focuses on how techn
ology is used to modify genes both for use as research tools in genetics a
nd evolutionary biology\, and also as a means of plant breeding. \n\nFree
bar snacks and good conversation provided!\n\n\n\n*Talks and speakers*\n\
n\n*"Biology as Technology: An Unexpected History of Innovation in Living
Things" *\n\nDr Helen Anne-Curry \nDepartment of History and Philosophy of
Science\n\nHelen's current research considers the history of global conse
rvation\, in particular efforts made to preserve the genetic diversity of
agricultural crop species through the practice of seed banking.\n\n\n\n*"B
reeding technology for better crops"*\n\nDr Alison Bentley\n\nNIAB\n\nAlis
on has worked on a range of projects within NIAB’s flagship wheat pre-br
eeding programme\, including research on characterising flowering time res
ponse and the exploitation of novel genetic diversity and genomics tools f
or wheat improvement. She has a strong interest in the genotype x environm
ent interactions controlling complex traits and in the application of geno
mics in the breeding of high yielding\, climate resilient cereals.
