DESCRIPTION:Sex-chromosome dosage compensation is essential in most metazo
an\, yet the developmental timing and the underlying strategies are remark
ably variable\, even amongst placental mammals. In the latter\, dosage com
pensation is achieved through the inactivation of one X chromosome in fema
les\, a process that has been so far mostly studied in the mouse\, where a
ctors and mechanisms have been characterized. Here we will discuss new ins
ights into how the activity of the X chromosome is regulated in human earl
y development\, and how long noncoding RNAs are contributing to this proce
 ss.
