DESCRIPTION:This paper examines the _Endeavour_ journal of Joseph Banks (1
743–1820) and how this manuscript diary\, essentially a record of the da
y-to-day events which occurred during this voyage\, is connected to Banks'
s and Daniel Solander's (1733–82) natural historical work. Throughout th
is diary\, Banks frequently mentions the new species he and Solander colle
cted and consistently refers to the printed works in the _Endeavour_ libra
ry\, showing the interconnectedness between different aspects of their col
lection. These printed works included their interleaved copies of Carl Lin
naeus's _Species Plantarum_ (1763) and _Systema Naturae_ (1758)\, which we
re annotated as the voyage progressed by Hermann Spöring (1733–71)\, So
lander's assistant. Banks and Solander's work during the _Endeavour_ voyag
e sheds light on the emergence of professional fieldwork during the late e
ighteenth century and the gradual standardisation of natural historical wo
rking practices under the Linnaean system\, which received an uneven recep
tion by British naturalists at this time.
