DESCRIPTION:The talk will survey several weak forms of amenability for dis
 crete groups that come up when studying group C*-algebras. While these pro
 perties are primarily of interest to operator algebraists\, to prove that 
 a given group possesses one or more of these properties generally requires
  geometric data.  I will try to convey the flavor of these arguments by wo
 rking through several examples.\n
