DESCRIPTION:A half-day conference discussing Schooling as Violence\, featu
ring keynotes by Professor Lynn Davies and Professor Clive Harber.\n\n*KEY
NOTES*\n\n*Professor Lynn Davies*\n\nI look at the role of schooling in jo
urneys into violent extremism\, and at current educational measures to int
errupt such pathways. Our research on former extremists and their familie
s (far right and Islamist) confirms a hugely complex mix of factors which
predispose people to radicalization. Neither schooling nor church/mosque
appears protective. Work on PVE in schools focuses on challenging the bla
ck and white thinking that characterizes extremism\, through programmes of
integrative complexity and value pluralism\, as well as by creating posit
ive conflict.\n\n*Bio*\n\nLynn Davies is Emeritus Professor of Internation
al Education at the University of Birmingham and Co-Director of the social
enterprise ConnectFutures. Her interests are in education and conflict\
, and in education and extremism\, and she has done research and consultan
cy in a number of conflict-affected states such as Afghanistan\, Bosnia\,
Angola and Sri Lanka. Work in UK includes evaluating programmes to counte
r radicalisation\, a project interviewing former extremists about their ba
ckgrounds\, and training of young people and teachers in preventing violen
t extremism. Her books include _Education and Conflict: Complexity and Ch
aos_ (2004)\, _Educating Against Extremism_ (2008) and _Unsafe Gods: Secur
ity\, Secularism and Schooling_ (2014). In October 2014 she was awarded t
he Sir Brian Urquhart award for Distinguished Service to the United Nation
s and its goals by a UK citizen.\n\n*Professor Clive Harber*\n\nThis talk
will examine and discuss different types of violence in schools globally a
ccording to their sources - whether they are externally generated\, inter
nally generated by omission or directly generated internally. It will then
put forward three explanatory factors helping to cause violence in socie
ties before analysing how schools contribute to these three factors. \n\n*
Bio*\n\nClive Harber is Emeritus Professor of International Education at t
he University of Birmingham. He has a long standing interest in education
for peace and democracy on the one hand and education for violence and aut
horitarianism on the other. Relevant publications include _Schooling As Vi
olence_ (Routledge 2004) and _Toxic Schooling_ (Educational Heretics Pres
s 2009). More recently his publications include _Education\, Democracy and
