DESCRIPTION:The Gaia satellite\, launched in December 2013\, will provide 
 the first six-dimensional census of the Milky Way using a billion-pixel vi
 deo camera. It will determine basic astrophysical properties for one billi
 on stars\, test general relativity\, and provide the first robust distance
  scale in cosmology. Professor Gerry Gilmore outlines what the first data
