DESCRIPTION:In this session\, I will present the findings of my Masters pr
oject on tall modular buildings\, completed as part of the Future Infrastr
ucture and Built Environment Centre for Doctoral Training. Modular buildin
gs are constructed from room-sized compartments made in a factory and asse
mbled on site. Their off-site nature can help accommodate population incre
ase in cities\, if the modular buildings can be extended to high-rise. In
this project\, I aimed to find the structural height limits of stacked tow
ers of steel modules. I considered different steel module topologies and b
oth ultimate and serviceability limit states. I proceeded to find the heig
ht at failure of each modular tower\, and presented the data obtained in t
he style of Ashby Charts. The charts revealed some unintuitive results\, w
hich I will discuss during the session.
