DESCRIPTION:Accurate prediction of an individual’s conscious experience
based only on measurements of their brain activity would provide strong ev
idence for a close link between brain and mind. Recent empirical and metho
dological advances in such ‘brain reading’ have yielded promising find
ings. Conscious perception of both simple features and complex object cate
gories can be predicted from characteristic\, distributed activity pattern
s in human visual cortex. Furthermore\, feature-selective processing can a
lso be demonstrated for stimuli of which the subject is completely unaware
. This talk will review recent empirical work from our laboratory and cons
ider how it contributes to revealing the way in which individual perceptua
l experiences are encoded in the human brain.
