 value to us of thinking in terms of counterfactual conditionals\, includin
 g their use in inference to the best explanation. Accounts of their episte
 mology in terms of reasoning and simulation will then be considered. Final
 ly\, a moral will be drawn for the distinction between a priori and a post
 eriori knowledge.
