DESCRIPTION:We have a special talk scheduled for March the 3rd (between 2
and 3pm) with Nonie Finlayson\, a visiting Postdoc from UCL\, giving a tal
k about the effect of depth information on visual search. Please spread it
around to anyone who might be interested!\n\n\n*The effects of depth info
 rmation on visual search*\nCraik-Marshall room\, Friday March 3rd\, 2-3pm\
 n_Nonie J. Finlayson_\n \nWe live in a 3D world\, and yet the majority of
vision research is restricted to 2D phenomena. Visual attention can be shi
fted through 3D space\, and as long as 30 years ago it was suggested that
depth information can be used to organize visual space to improve search p
erformance. However\, more recent research has failed to replicate this ad
vantage for depth information under different circumstances\, and further
suggested that we are unable to hold our attention to just one depth while
ignoring others. In this talk I describe evidence supporting the benefits
of visual search in depth\, and outline the required parameters to take a
dvantage of depth information in visual search. I will then present result
s that examine visual search in depth more generally\, describing how each
of four parameters of 3D visual space can influence visual search perform
 ance.
