DESCRIPTION:From Isaac Newton onwards\, Cambridge has been associated with
some of the most famous mathematicians in history. Modern mathematicians
and theoretical physicists work on everything from the Big Bang to number
theory\, from geometry to modelling the shrinking of Arctic sea ice\, expl
oring quantum information or understanding how disease epidemics spread.\n
\nJoin volunteer staff and students from the Faculty of Mathematics to sha
re the excitement of the subject through hands-on activities\, games and d
emonstrations (featuring everything from Lego epidemics to the mathematics
of image processing!) for visitors of all ages from 8 through to adult.\n
\nThe Maths Public Open Day also offers a very rare opportunity to explore
inside the fluids dynamics laboratory hidden beneath the lawn of one of t
he most beautiful modern buildings in Cambridge. Hands-on fluids activitie
s and demos will explore some of the areas on which Cambridge applied math
ematicians work.\n\nThe Maths Cafe will be open throughout the event\, ser
 ving tea\, coffee\, soft drinks\, snacks\, cakes and sandwiches.\n\nThis e
