DESCRIPTION:Join us for an expert discussion on the new Far Right in moder
 n-day Europe\, with perspectives from history\, sociology and politics/int
 ernational relations. This event is jointly organized by the CU Belgian So
 ciety\, the CU European Society\, the CU French Society and the CU German 
 Society.\n\nSPEAKERS:\n\n- Dr Hugo Drochon (Faculty of History\, Cambridge
 ) is a historian of late nineteenth and twentieth century political though
 t. His current research centres on elite theories of democracy and the imp
 act their thinking had on the development of democratic theory in American
  and Europe after WWII.\n\n- Prof. Montserrat Guibernau (Department of Soc
 iology\; POLIS\, Cambridge) adopts a multidisciplinary intellectual agenda
  in politics and sociology\, concerning key academic and policy debates ab
 out migration\, nationalism and ethnic diversity in the EU and the US as w
 ell as the study of challenges posed by secessionism and ethnic violence. 
 She is particularly interested in cultural issues of identity as well as p
 olitical mobilisation\, including the rise of populism and the resurgence 
 of authoritarian regimes in the West. She has engaged in empirical researc
 h in Scotland\, Northern Ireland\, Catalonia\, Quebec\, the Veneto\, Austr
 ia\, Norway and most recently\, Greece.\n\n- Léonie de Jonge is conductin
 g her PhD research (POLIS\, Cambridge) on populism and xenophobia in small
  Western European States\, focusing particularly on the success and failur
 e of Right Wing populist parties with an anti-immigration agenda.\n\nAfter
  a moderated discussion\, the floor will be opened to questions from the a
 udience.\n\nThis is the second of a series of panel discussions on the ris
 e of political extremism in Europe.
