DESCRIPTION:Soil liquefaction during earthquakes causes a number of engine
ering problems. This talk will look at the problem of quantifying large st
ructural settlements and identify a major omission from traditional design
. Using a combination of field investigation and physical modelling we wil
l show how design can be improved\, and also demonstrate a rather counter-
intuitive feature of foundations for large structures. Having then identif
ied some problems we shall have a look at potential solutions\, paying par
ticular attention to the novel technique of reinforcing soil with syntheti
c fibres. The success of these in physical model tests is seen to depend o
n certain conditions being met that had not been identified by previous wo
rk using element testing. This opens the door to future investigations in
which root structures are explored as potential mitigation against liquefa
 ction.
