DESCRIPTION:Professor Peter Singer will give the 10th Routledge Lecture in
Philosophy entitled "The Point of View of the Universe: Defending Sidgwic
k's Ethics". \n\nHenry Sidgwick\, Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy at
Cambridge and the cofounder of Newnham College\, is\, along with Bentham a
nd Mill\, one of the three great nineteenth century utilitarians. Singer'
s own work in ethics is consistent with Sidgwick's idea that in ethics we
should take "the point of view of the universe."\n\nIn this talk he shall
explore the implications of taking that stance\, and ask how much of Sidgw
ick's utilitarianism is still defensible today.\n\nThis is a public lectur
e but booking is required. Book a place at: https://routledge-lecture-2017
