DESCRIPTION:The positioning of the mitotic spindle along the mother-daught
er cell polarity axis is critical for the outcome of cell division in asym
metrically dividing budding yeast cells. A surveillance mechanism\, known
as the spindle position checkpoint (SPOC)\, senses defects in spindle orie
ntation thereby inhibiting mitotic exit and cytokinesis. I will discuss ou
r currently understanding of SPOC activation and how temporal and compartm
ent-specific regulatory networks determine mitotic exit in this system.
