DESCRIPTION:Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory that describes how
the fundamental building blocks of matter - quarks and gluons - are bound
together to make protons and neutrons. I will describe this theory and how
it can help us to understand matter in the world around us as well as exo
tic matter that was formed in the early universe\, fractions of a second a
fter the big bang.\nNumerical simulations play a crucial role in QCD and I
will discuss why and how the world's most powerful supercomputers are use
d to understand the properties of matter.
