DESCRIPTION:In industrial practice geometry models are first created with
computer-aided design (CAD) and then discretised with a boundary-conformin
g mesh for finite element analysis (FEA). The discretisation process is co
stly\, error-prone and is becoming a bottleneck with increasing complexity
of engineering products. In this talk\, we will introduce a novel immerse
d/embedded finite element technique based on implicit distance field repre
sentations. The distance field is used for both describing the geometry an
d enforcing the boundary conditions during the simulation. This approach e
ffectively eliminates the complex mesh generation procedure. Our ongoing w
ork in immersed methods aims to increase their efficiency and accuracy whe
n applied to complex industrial geometries with fine geometrical detail an
d freeform organic shapes. To demonstrate the benefits of the proposed app
roach several solid and fluid mechanics simulations will be presented.
