DESCRIPTION:Bose-Einstein condensation is an amazing physical phenomenon.
At\nthe same time\, at least for the non-interacting case that Einstein w
orked\nwith\, it's only "balls in boxes'. In joint work with Chatterjee a
nd\nSoundararajan\, we treat the problem using number-theoretic partition\
ntheory. Our work gives new results about the size and shape of the\ncond
ensate below the critical temperature. They work for very general\npotent
ials and raise new questions for the spectral theory of Schrödinger\noper
ators. Finally they show that a mainstay of statistical physics\,\n"equiv
alence of ensembles"\, is pretty slippery business. This is an\nexpositor
 y talk\, no physics knowledge presupposed. After all\, it's only\nballs i
n boxes. \n\nThe talk will be followed by a wine reception in the Central
 Core\, CMS.
