DESCRIPTION:Research exploring the causes of autism spectrum disorder has
increased significantly in recent years. This talk develops the concept of
the maternal body as environment to describe how studies focused on envir
onmental risk factors are producing women's bodies as sites of growing con
sequence for understanding childhood difference today. I argue that this s
cience reflects new spatial and temporal dimensions of parental responsibi
lity\, and new ideas about the relationships between bodies and environmen
 ts in the post-genomic era.
