DESCRIPTION:Easter Term’s Research Masterclass\, entitled “An introduc
tion to DARPA funding” will be given by Dr Robert Watson and Professor S
imon Moore\, of the Computer Laboratory\, on Tuesday 25 April 2017. It wil
 l take place at 12.00 in LR12\, Department of Engineering.\n\nA sandwich l
unch will be provided. Those interested are asked to register to attend at
 : https://www.eventbrite.com/e/technology-research-funding-masterclass-an-
 introduction-to-darpa-funding-tickets-33487581257\n\nAn abstract for the t
alk is reproduced below:\nThe Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (D
ARPA) is a US funding agency whose mission is to "prevent and cause strate
gy surprise" -- i.e.\, to anticipate and develop advanced technologies sup
porting the US Department of Defence. DARPA is known for funding the devel
opment of technologies such as weather satellites\, phased radar arrays\,
TCP/IP\, and stealth technology\, and supports R&D projects across US acad
emic and industry. DARPA is a high-expertise agency\, bringing in domain e
xperts on multi-year secondments to lead research programs that fund dozen
s of institutions collaborating (and competing) in common research areas f
ounded around specific challenges and opportunities. DARPA research projec
t are contracts with deliverables\, and DARPA is a highly engaged sponsor
eager to transition technologies to widespread industrial use as well as m
ilitary applications. Success is rewarded with additional funding. Intelle
ctual property terms are generous and intended to support rapid transition
\, and funding is suitable for large multi-year\, multi-institution projec
ts with substantial engineering and prototyping elements\, as well as earl
y field deployments and evaluation exercises. The Computer Laboratory has
now had a number of DARPA-sponsored projects starting in 2010\, developing
both short-term and blue-sky technologies. This talk will introduce atten
dees to the structure and key concepts around the DARPA funding model incl
uding its offices\, programme development and management\, proposal cycle\
, and day-to-day operation through a set of examples drawn from our own ex
 perience.
