DESCRIPTION:A number of recent advances have overcome a many of the obstru
ctions to the construction of superstring field theory - an attempt at a s
econd-quantised description of string theory. In separate developments\, t
he great progress made in the study and simplification of scattering ampli
tudes in field theory have led to novel `string-like' descriptions of supe
rgravity. I will give a brief overview of some of these developments and s
how how they lead towards a string field description for supergravity.\n\n
No prior knowledge of string field theory will be needed and only a passin
g familiarity with conventional string theory will be assumed.
