DESCRIPTION:Given that the prebiotic inventory necessary for life was like
ly produced photochemically\, I talk about how we can experimentally deter
mine how effective the ultraviolet (UV) photochemistry is versus bimolecul
ar reactions that happen in the absence of the UV light (‘dark chemistry
’). I discuss what stellar UV fields are necessary for building up this
prebiotic inventory on exoplanets\, considering both the quiescent stellar
emission and the effect of flares and coronal mass ejections.
