DESCRIPTION:The layered oxide\, NaxCoO2 shows a variety of behaviors that
make it the subject of\nmuch current debate. These include a complex phase
diagram as a function of x. This\nphase diagram has compositions with mag
 netism\, metal insulator transitions\, and most\nremarkably\, exceedingly
high thermopower combined with high metallic conductivity.\nFurthermore\,
upon hydration\, the material becomes a superconductor whose nature is not
\nyet well understood. The purpose of this talk is to introduce this compo
und and its\nproperties using the electronic structure as a basis. Some pr
operties\, such as the\nthermopower\, and magneto-thermopower\, appear to
be understandable at the level of\nstandard electronic structure theory\,
while others remain mysterious. Some related oxides\nthat may have propert
ies similar to NaxCoO2 are discussed.
