SUMMARY:Engineering with uncertain load regimes and strange materials –
the story of aerospace and nuclear safety critical components - Prof Dav
 e Rugg\, Senior Fellow\, Rolls Royce
DTSTART:20170512T130000Z

DESCRIPTION:The reality of designing and certifying safety critical produc
t is both fascinating and complex. Often\, life-limiting regimes are unexp
ected and require deep mechanistic understanding to fully mitigate them. T
hese issues will be reviewed in the context of current research aimed at i
mproving our understanding and predictive capability. This will include th
e evolution of strain heterogeneity in materials and modelling / experimen
tal techniques for high strain rate loading. In addition\, there will be s
ome obligatory footage of jet engines blowing up. In addition\, an overvie
w of the challenges\, rewards and potential frustrations of working in ind
ustry and managing academic interfaces will be provided.
