DESCRIPTION:Following the recent publication of the book “Equilibrium Fi
 nite Element Formulations” by Moitinho de Almeida and Maunder\, this tal
 k will outline the significance\, recent developments\, and some applicati
 ons of this relatively unfamiliar finite element method.\nAlthough the bas
 ic concepts underlying this method were realized in the early days of fini
 te elements\, the more conventional conforming element models based on ass
 umed displacements\, with consequent weakened equilibrium\, won the day. H
 owever the alternative complementary method based on assumed equilibrating
  stress fields is preparing to make its comeback!\n
