DESCRIPTION:Radically novel materials change shape by 100s% following temp
erature or illumination changes. Such sophisticated response suggests dif
ferent ideas for deploying such materials from in conventional mechanics a
nd devices. \nWe describe the materials and new mechanics paradigms to exp
loit their novelty: Local material shape changes can be arranged so that i
ntrinsic curvature is induced into flat spaces. I will employ many demonst
rations\, and re-examine the map-maker’s problem of resolving planes wit
 h curved space.\n
