DESCRIPTION:Searching for space-time variations in fundamental constants p
rovides an important test of grand unification theories. Recent quasar me
asurements hint at a possible spatial dependence of the fine structure con
stant over cosmological distance scales. I will discuss the current status
of this and describe how we aim to make the first 1000 measurements of va
rying alpha at high redshift. Such a large survey is made possible by the
application of Artificial Intelligence methods for automated spectral ana
lysis\, that also reduce systematics\, and remove any possible human bias
 in the results.
