DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on two of our research topics in energy s
ystems modeling. The first topic will tackle the problem of energy savings
in buildings using advanced distributed control techniques. Taking into a
ccount occupancy patterns and their timings\, these controls can lead to m
ajor reductions in energy consumption by using zonal thermal response and
energy asset degradation as main inputs for pre-occupy and post-occupy con
trol schemes at building zones. The second topic tackles the problem of pl
anning and controlling energy storages at distribution network using a net
work-aware approach. A stochastic optimization model first solves a planni
ng problem using load forecast and network topology inputs. This model is
then solved for various stochastic inputs\, and input-output patterns are
extracted for simple control rules at each energy storage node across the
 network.
