DESCRIPTION:The interstellar medium drives galaxy formation and outflows. 
 \nIts multi-phase structure is set by gravitation\, cooling and chemistry 
 as well as "feedback"\, mostly form massive stars. I will present results 
 from recent simulations with a well resolved interstellar medium and discu
 ss the impact of stellar winds\, ionising radiation\, and supernova explos
 ions on setting the ISM structure and the initial driving of galactic outf
 lows.\n
