DESCRIPTION: In recent years a new approach has been developed to several
 long\nstanding conjectures in the representation theory of finite groups\;
  such as\nthe McKay conjecture. These conjectures are stated for all finit
 e groups but\nthe recent approach has reduced these conjectures to checkin
 g certain\nconditions on quasisimple finite groups (often referred to as i
 nductive\nconditions). This\, in theory\, makes the conjecture more manage
 able thanks to\nthe classification of finite simple groups. However\, the
 downside to this is\nthat one requires information about how automorphisms
  act on the irreducible\ncharacters of quasisimple finite groups. In this
 talk we present new results\nin this direction concerning the finite sympl
 ectic groups Sp(2n\,q) where q\nis an odd prime power. Specifically we com
 pletely describe the action of the\nautomorphism group on the ordinary irr
 educible characters of these groups.
