DESCRIPTION:Cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix governs virtually ev
ery aspect of cell behaviour. Integrins are the main cell adhesion recepto
rs capable of triggering activation of downstream signalling pathways and
enabling cells to sense the stiffness of their microenvironment. Force tra
nsmission to the cellular cytoskeleton triggers mechanochemical signalling
influencing cell proliferation\, gene expression and cell morphology. In
my seminar I will describe how matrix stiffness regulates epigenetics and
transcription in cancer cells and how mechanical coupling of the cytoskele
ton to matrix is essential for maintenance of pluripotency in hPSC.
