DESCRIPTION:A grand challenge in the field of dynamic compression is to un
derstand how mesoscale (nanosecond-microsecond\, micrometre-millimetre) de
formation processes govern macroscopic material behaviour and performance.
In this seminar I will discuss the development and application of a novel
synchrotron X-ray radiography technique\, which is able to make in situ m
easurements of shock-compression at the mesoscale. Focus will be given to
direct measurements of granular compaction in several systems relevant to
chondritic asteroid formation\, including the observation of normally dist
ributed shock velocities\, measurements of shock front thickness\, and cal
culations of spatially-resolved mass density fields. \n\n[1]: M.E. Rutherf
