DESCRIPTION:Have recent events in the United Kingdom and United States lef
t you wondering what the global political and economic order will look lik
e in the future? Do you have ideas about how the combination of economic c
risis\, environmental catastrophe and shifting power within the global eco
nomy will shape the world around us for generations to come? Did you predi
ct the outcome of the recent general election correctly when so many comme
ntators were wrong? If so\, this is the event for you!\n\nThe British and
Comparative Political Economy Group welcomes you to the beautiful setting
of the Webb Library\, situated within the grounds of Jesus College (Cambri
dge). Here\, a panel of experts will debate future trajectories of change
as we try to make sense of where this period of 'great uncertainty' is hea
ding.\nThis is also your opportunity to contribute\, as there will be a st
rong emphasis on audience participation. Avoiding the traditional model of
equivalent events\, interactive sessions will be incorporated into the de
velopment of the discussion to ensure as many voices and ideas can be hear
d as possible. But do not worry\, no homework preparation is required!\n\n
We are pleased to introduce a fantastic panel\, including Jeremy Green (Ch
air)\, Helen Thompson\, Joel Faulkner Rogers\, Glen O'Hara and Paul Krishn
amurty\, with more speakers to be announced in the near future.\nA wide-ra
nging discussion will be encouraged\, directed by the following types of q
uestions:\n\nConsidering the surprise by which many events have taken soci
ety\, should we attempt to be predictive and anticipatory when conducting
political and economic analysis? Or\, is the world so inherently unpredict
able that we should avoid taking part in such activity?\nHow much does the
weight of history hang over future trajectories of political and economic
change? Has the study of the future become too detached from the study of
history?\nWhat impact are political and economic changes going to have on
future generations? How will the young of today shape these?\nWe look for
ward to seeing you in September for what promises to be a lively event!\n\
