DESCRIPTION:Effective altruism is about answering one question: how can we
  use our resources to help others the most? Rather than just doing what fe
 els right\, we use evidence and careful analysis to find the very best cau
 ses to work on.\n\nInterested in learning more? We’d love to meet you. J
 oin us for drinks\, snacks and interesting conversations about the most ef
 fective ways to do good. \n\nWe’ll start by watching Esther Duflo’s TE
 D talk on using science to evaluate efforts to alleviate poverty. \n\nEsth
 er Duflo is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and De
 velopment Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In her r
 esearch\, she seeks to understand the economic lives of the poor\, with th
 e aim to help design and evaluate social policies. \n\nAfter this\, there 
 will be a “Giving Game”\, which will provide an opportunity to learn a
 bout three different charities\, and to vote for the one which you determi
 ne to be the most effective. \n\nThere will be on a short presentation on 
 each charity: \n\nThe Against Malaria Foundation\nSchistosomiasis Control 
 Initiative\nDevelopment Media International \n\nWe have received funding t
 o donate £10 per attendee to the charity which receives the most votes.\n
 \nThe event is open to the public\, regardless of affiliation with the Uni
 versity of Cambridge\, and attendance is free.\n\nEffective Altruism Cambr
 idge is part of an international community of people who are using evidenc
 e and careful analysis to find the best ways to do good. It is the umbrell
