DESCRIPTION:_Dam-break flows\, whereby a material at rest within a lock is
  abruptly set into motion by the rapid removal of the lockgate\, are of wi
 despread interest\, not just because of the generic unsteady flows they ge
 nerate\, but also of their direct application to environmental and enginee
 ring problems.  In this seminar\, I will present results that show how uns
 teady dam-break flows are arrested by a yield stress (visco-plastic materi
 als) or by the action of drag (similar materials)._
