DESCRIPTION:Are glides just second-class versions of vowels? If so\, why d
oes the\nglide [y] sometimes become [k] in varieties of Greek and Romance?
  Why\ndoes the glide [w] sometimes become [m]? Moreover\, why are glides\n
skipped over in vowel harmony\, even though they would seem to involve\nth
e same articulatory gestures? In this talk\, based on Nevins &\nChitoran (
2007)\, i will propose that glides are mentally represented\nas neither vo
wels nor consonants\, have their own constriction degree\,\nand have two D
esignated Articulatory organs. The interaction of the\nlogic of abstract b
inary featural representations together with\nrepresentational notions suc
h as constrastivity and representational\nsimplification yield this typolo
 gy of puzzling patterns.\n
