DESCRIPTION:What is the optimum level of guidance teachers should provide
when teaching scientific concepts and skills? Which teaching approach work
s the best and for whom? How do students’ previous knowledge and achieve
ment level interact with teaching? During the first part of the talk I wil
l explore these questions and introduce the audience in current debates in
science education research concerning the “best” way to teach science
in schools and more particularly in primary schools. In the second part
of the talk\, I will offer some empirical insight into how educational res
earchers study these sort of questions and what are the challenges they fa
ce in a school environment. Examples from my PhD work will be provided.
