DESCRIPTION:Preparation\, structure\, and performance in application of ma
terials are in close interaction with each other. Hence\, a detailed analy
sis of the pore structure of a functional material in combination with a d
etailed characterisation of the performance can provide crucial insights t
o understand the influence of individual parameters during preparation and
to identify structural limitations towards a more successful utilization.
The obtained results can be used to tune the preparation towards an optim
ized pore structure for the aspired application. Here\, this is demonstrat
ed exemplarily on the optimization of the packing protocol for capillary c
olumns used in chromatographic separations utilizing confocal laser scanni
ng microscopy. Similar studies have been initiated for other material type
s like monolithic silica structures and electrode utilizing focused ion be
am scanning electron microscopy and are presented as a perspective.
