DESCRIPTION:The interstellar medium drives galaxy formation and outflows. 
 Its multi-phase structure is set by gravitation\, cooling and chemistry as
  well as "feedback"\, mostly form massive stars. I will present results fr
 om recent simulations with a well resolved interstellar medium and discuss
  the impact of stellar winds\, ionising radiation\, and supernova explosio
 ns on setting the ISM structure and the initial driving of galactic outflo
 ws.
