DESCRIPTION:This talk surveys the ways in which people currently cheat in
online first-person "twitch-based" computer games. It then discusses how t
he tactics used by hardcore players (as satirised in the famous "Boom! Hea
dshot!" youtube video) are often mistaken for cheating\, and argues that p
reventing the perception of cheating is an equally interesting security-re
lated challenge to preventing actual cheating.\n\nThe talk focuses specifi
cally on the evolution of a special sort of winning tactic – the neo-tac
tic – the use of which often appear cheating-like. This sort of tactic e
xploits the underlying low-level physics properties of the virtual environ
ment\, for example network latency effects.\n\nThe talk is a much more col
ourful\, diagrammatic\, screenshot-rich (and hopefully more accessible) pr
esentation of my paper with the same name.\n
