DESCRIPTION:The emergence of imperial and colonial joint-stock banks in Br
 itain and its imperial territories between 1800 and 1850 created new chall
 enges of regulation for the British state.  What should they look like\, h
 ow should they be regulated\, and whose interests should they serve?  Usin
 g Jamaica as its main case study\, this paper will look at how and why the
  modern system of global finance emerged out of the messy political\, soci
 al and economic clashes of these decades.
