DESCRIPTION:It is 50 years since the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory a
 t Lord's Bridge was dedicated. In this lecture\, the many pioneering contr
 ibutions to observational astrophysics and cosmology made at the Observato
 ry will be described and placed in their historical\, astrophysical and co
 smological context. The story reflects the staggering growth in understand
 ing of all aspects of the origin and evolution of the Universe over the la
 st 50 years. It will be brought right up to date with the most recent resu
 lts and the plans for the future. \n\nThe lecture will be delivered at a n
 on-technical level and will be accessible to an audience of all ages. It w
 ill be profusely illustrated with images\, movies and interactive simulati
 ons. \n
