DESCRIPTION:Ice streams are the principal drainage features of the Antarct
ic ice sheet\, channeling 90% of the ice flow from the interior to the coa
st. Rutford Ice Stream in West Antarctica drains a catchment to the north
and west of the Ellsworth Mountains. The ice divide between the catchmen
ts of Rutford Ice Stream and Pine Island Glacier is poorly defined in plac
es and is a location where we might expect significant change to flow regi
mes in the future. I used the British Antarctic Survey’s DELORES (Deep
Look Radio Echo Sounder) radar system to map isochronal layering and the i
ce stream bed on several traverses of the onset region of Rutford Ice Stre
am. This talk has two strands: 1) to describe the present flow regime in
the onset region of Rutford Ice Stream\, near to the ice divide\; and 2) t
o describe the development of bedforms as the ice flow speed increases thr
 ough the region.
