DESCRIPTION:_Partula_ snails have a history that has long been associated 
 with the major developments in biology. This was largely eclipsed by the m
 ass extinction of most _Partula_  species in the 1990s\, since when they h
 ave been emblematic of the biodiversity crisis and the issues of invertebr
 ate conservation. The situation in French Polynesia was reappraised in Aug
 ust with a study of the new threats to the surviving species and a search 
 for other survivors in little known parts of the islands. The results of t
 his are presented for the first time.
